I bought a 5.1 surround sound system, and I was watching a review and it said you should place the subwoofer on the floor so it sends vibrations through the floor to the walls or something.. if I have carpeting will that make it bad? thanks

No - you are fine with carpeting.

In truth - you get a LOT of subwoofer sound by wall and ceiling reflections. This has led to the myth that subwoofer frequencies are ‘directionless’ but thats not true. Since you have the walls and ceiling (and the floor holds up a lot of weight) it’s the least-used reflection point.

Often you want to position the sub near a corner to emphasize the lower frequencies (which are harder to produce)

Try this: Pick the corner with the 2 longest, un-broken walls. Measure in 2/5 or 1/3 along the longest wall and locate the sub here.

There is a lot more you can do to play and measure with sub positions, but this is a good starting point.

I’m new to car audio & looking for 12" subs that has the best sound quality & with deep earthshaking bass that can be heard from a distant e.g that is good enough to set off car alarms!
After looking around - 2 Alpine’s Type R’s that cost $220, OR 1 JL for $300. Both of these have top notch reviews, and JL reviewers say that even 1 of these rocks!!
I can either go for 2 of these Alpines or 1 JL due to my budget…whats the best choice?
I was first considering to go for 1 JL AUDIO 12W6v2 but as thats pricey I will go for 2 subs instead.
I want the best sound quality and bass that can heard from a distant and good enough to set off car alarms - serious sound!!
The 2 Alpine Type R’s are for $220. 2 Kickers are for $300, and 2 JLs are $300.
Which one is the daddy?
Pioneer 12" TS-W3002D4 (1000RMS) …now these sound better and only $150…what ya think about this compared to the others in SQ/SPL? Obviously a powerful amp is needed to run these!

I would get 2 JL cuz there the best. But you would rather have 2 subs one for the right an one for the left. So go with the alpines. But if you can check out some kickers there really good an the top stuff for your money. Go to the pawn shop an look around or go on ebay you will be able to find cheaper subs on there that are good.

What’s the best Subwoofer box to use?

Posted by admin in 29

Trying to find out which box will produce the best sound… I have a sealed box now with my 2 12’s but was looking to go with a vented/ported or plexi-glass bandpass box, but don’t want to waste my money if I’m not going to get any kind of difference from the switch. I’m driving a 09 Nissan Sentra, and I was told that cars with Trunks sound better with sealed boxes and vented/ported and bandpass enclosure boxes are for open cars like SUV’s. I’m getting mixed reviews online because I hear a lot of website says that bandpass box and ported boxes are the best for any kind of car, and some sites say it depends on your style of music. Anyhow, let me know your input on the matter…. Thanks!

i would say go with either ported or bandpassed. be careful if you are doing this yourself and look up the port sizes etc. but i personally had all three and out of all of them i liked the sealed the worst. I’m a big fan of loud bass, and i ended up going with a ported box on my last 2 boxes. but size of your application could be a problem as for ported boxes are usually larger, but the resonance to me makes it worth it… it’s all about personal preference. -w
