best way of hooking up car subwoofers to a home theatre/PC connection?

The sub(s) will depend on the amount of space you have available. A single 12" sub should be more than enough for most houses. In an apartment or bedroom either a 8" or 10" would work. When shopping, what you want to look for is sound pressure level at 1 watt for efficiency. The higher the db rating, the less power it takes to make more sound. Of course then you have to build a box. The box configuration will be entirely dependant on the sub you choose. Keep in mind a downward facing sub will generate a lot more sound than one that faces out into the room. Don't forget your crossover filter to cancel out all frequencies above about 50hz.
I would not recommend using a car audio amp for home use. You will have to get a 110 volt A/C to 12 volt DC stepdown transformer that is capable of generating at least 50 amps. This would waste a huge amount of power and pretty costly. You are better off with a regular amp.
